Hastings, located on Western Port Bay in Victoria, was originally founded in 1840. There is a lot of industry in the area although it supports a large fishing fleet. It is surrounded by farmland, much of which was settled in the early 1800’s, Coolart Homestead being just one example. There are many mudflats and mangroves, natural hatcheries for the many species of fish and bird-life which abound in the area and Port Phillip and Western Port Bays.
The Australian Navy training base, HMAS Cerberus, is located just 6 klms. to the south of the town.

The walking track through the Bay of Fires is actually located within the Freycinet National Park. It is approximately 30 klms long and in places it passes through rocky stretches of coastal scrub-land. The bay of Fires is so named because the indigenous owners of the land had many middens along the coast and the fires that were lit in them were first spotted by English navigator Tobias Furneaux, so he named it “The Bay of Fires”.

Located in the Freycinet National Park on the east coast of Tasmania, it comprises a peninsula defined by Schouten Island and a granite mountain range known as “The Hazards”. Trails lead up to a lookout offering panoramic views over Wineglass Bay. White stretches of sand include The Friendly Beaches while Honeymoon and Sleepy Bays form secluded coves. Views from Cape Tourville lighthouse stretch out over the Tasman Sea.

Widespread in inland and coastal waters of Australia and New Guinea, they are predominately white with black wings and a pink bill. They eat mainly fish but will eat small birds and scraps if the opportunity arises.
This Pelican has a purposeful look about him, probably hoping for a good feed.

Depicted here on the wetlands at Ewen Maddock Dam near Caloundra. Many swans and other bird-life make their homes in these wetlands.
Black swans are endemic to Australia and breed primarily on the wetlands of south eastern and western Australia. They may nest at any time of the year, however the peak breeding season is between June and November. The nest is a large platform of weeds and other debris, usually one to one and a half metres in diameter and one metre high, in shallow water or at the waters edge. The nests are not re-used, but are built from scratch every year. The clutch generally contains between four and eleven eggs and the incubation period is about 35 to 40 days, shared by both male and female but with the female normally taking the ‘night shift’.
Whilst, as depicted here, they look very serene, they aggressively defend their nest with vigorous beating of their wings.

The Cotswolds, an area in south-central UK is characterized by many small villages like Sherebourne, Burton-on-the Water, Burford and many other picturesque villages.
The area comprises many homes and historic buildings made of the local Cotswold Stone, a yellow oolitic limestone which is often rich in fossils. As the stone ages, the colour mellows to a soft yellow.
The area is very picturesque and is favored by many wealthy Londoners for the location of their holiday homes and for their ultimate retirement.
