🖋️ Statement

Ranald’s formal introduction to drawing/painting at Brisbane’s QIT(now QUT) night-school in 1965/66 was followed with layout and design studies for his advertising/marketing qualifications via the same college.

🖋️ About the Artist

  • During his early service as an army officer in 1970s, Ranald enjoyed oil painting and sketching of family boats, etc on a casual basis.

  • More night-schooling towards an Applied Arts Diploma at Riverina CAE also awoke his appreciation of photography as an art form.

  • Workshops in water colour at Brisbane’s Institute of Fine Arts and in oils with Rick Everingham in early 1980s further fed his artistic bent. So on concluding regular military service in 1985, he was again at night-school as a visiting student at applied textiles and printing studies for art teachers at the Kelvin Grove CAE.

  • He enthusiastically applied this new knowledge of fabrics/screen-printing skills to produce and adorn leisurewear to wholesale and retail from his/his wife, Jillian’s, ‘Lizard of Oz’ shop at Paddington.

  • Some interesting Defence and State Government projects interrupted from the early 1990s for the next 20 years. But after retirement in late 2012, he keenly returned to his art via some workshops in: acrylics with Janet Mathews, pastels with Trish Taylor, colour and texture with Kerry Wilson and a round-out in all aspects by completing a Visual Arts Diploma at Nambour TAFE in 2014. The latter provided a new adventure for him in art - 3D, ceramics.

Ranald’s eclectic works reflect his diverse experiences, love of nature and fascination with the art mediums now available to us all.
