Pam Black

Born and educated in Townsville, I graduated (Diploma Fine Arts) from the Townsville college of TAFE majoring in painting in 1989. I then went on to complete a Graduate Diploma of Secondary Education through Monash University majoring in Art and English which led to my teaching career.

I have been interested in painting all my life and my awards over time include – 1988, one of the 10 Finalists in the REIQ Urban Landscape Competition, a Queensland wide Courier Mail Award; 2011 Winner of Kenilworth Art ($15,000) Acquisitive Award; and 2011 Winner Alan Reading Contemporary Art Award.

Most of my influence comes from the landscape and the environment and whilst I wrestle with the works until I have achieved that quick glimpse, I mostly enjoy the act of painting, especially the loose underpainting and then combine abstract mark making using colour and texture to keep the work layered and transparent. Sometimes my final work appears minimal although it may have endured several processes.

I have had solo exhibitions in Townsville, Tasmania, Pomona and tutored many workshops on Contemporary Landscape in Mitchell, Noosa, Kenilworth, Bli Bli and Caloundra where I encourage the artists to develop their own style working one on one with each student.
